Digital Cordless Phones
HELP! to Improve Access to Cordless Phones for People who use Hearing Aids
Cordless phones are covered by the Hearing Aid Compatibility Act of 1989.
Consumers with hearing loss have been able to use their telecoil-equipped
hearing aids with cordless phones quite successfully. However, cordless
phones have "gone digital" and are now causing interference with hearing
aids. Consumers have told us that 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz and digital spread
spectrum cordless phones are causing particular problems. Some models of
phones even have disclaimers on the box that they may not be usable with
hearing aids, even though they are required by law to be hearing aid
compatible.
SHHH has brought this to the attention of the FCC and requested that the law
be better enforced. If you have tried to purchase a cordless phone or
actually purchased one and found that you cannot use it with your hearing
aid it is important that you let the FCC know by filing an informal
complaint at fccinfo@fcc.gov.
Be specific, not vague, by giving the following information:
Model:
Make:
Frequency:
Where did you purchase or try to purchase the phone?
Why are you not able to use the phone?
Describe the problem.
How would you like to see this problem resolved?
