2004 HENRY B. BETTS AWARD COMPETITION:

The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago recently announced that the competition for the prestigious 2004 Henry B. Betts Award has opened. The deadline for nominations is 5:00 PM Eastern Time, Friday, October 15, 2004. One individual will be selected to receive this year's unrestricted $50,000 cash award to be presented at the fourth annual AAPD Leadership Gala in 2005 in Washington, DC. The Betts Award, created by the Prince Charitable Trusts and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, honors an individual whose work and scope of influence have significantly improved the quality of life for people with disabilities. It is named in honor of Henry B. Betts, MD in recognition of his pioneering leadership in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation and decades of dedicated service to the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. 2004 ACCESSIBLE AMERICA COMPETITION:

The National Organization on Disability (N.O.D.) recently announced their fourth annual $25,000 "Accessible America" award competition. This coveted award is open to all U.S. cities and towns, and America's mayors and chief elected officials are encouraged to enter their communities. This contest, sponsored by UPS, will enable cities and towns to showcase how their citizens with disabilities are participating in and contributing to local community life. Entries must be postmarked by the deadline of October 31, 2004. Phoenix, Arizona was the 2003 winner. Venice, Florida won the inaugural contest, and Irvine, California was the 2004 winner. THE 2004 PAUL G. HEARNE/AAPD LEADERSHIP AWARDS COMPETITION:

The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) is accepting applications for their "emerging leader" awards. Up to three people with disabilities who are emerging as leaders in their respective fields will be awarded $10,000 each through the program to help them continue their progress and development as a leader. The deadline is September 10, 2004. For complete application instructions and information on past awardees, see the AAPD Web site.

NATIONAL SCHOLAR AWARD FOR WORKPLACE INNOVATION & DESIGN:

NISH announced the availability of the 2004/2005 application packet for this competition that is open to undergraduate and graduate students. The purpose of the NISH National Scholar Award for Workplace Innovation & Design is to encourage students to create technological solutions to barriers that prevent people with severe disabilities from entering or advancing in the workplace. Up to three cash awards will be presented. The deadline is February 28, 2005. The application packet is available online.

VSA ARTS YOUNG SOLOISTS AWARDS:

The VSA arts Young Soloists Award annually recognizes outstanding young musicians with disabilities, ages 25 and under, who have exhibited exceptional talents as vocalists or instrumentalists. Each year, a committee of music professionals selects four award recipients to receive scholarship funds and the opportunity to perform at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. All types of music are encouraged. To be eligible, the applicant must: be a vocalist or instrumentalist; be age 25 or under on November 1, 2004; and have a disability. See the VSA arts Web site for complete program information.

QUALITY OF LIFE GRANTS PROGRAM:

Sponsored by The Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation, provides grants to non-profit organizations for activities in twelve "quality of life" areas and for health promotion. Application deadlines are April 1 and October 1. Details available online.

HOME DEPOT FOUNDATION:

This foundation supports nonprofits focused on at-risk youth. Applications are accepted July 15, October 15, January 15 and April 15. Visit the website at www.homedepotfoundation.org .

PUBLIC WELFARE FOUNDATION GRANTS TO NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS:

The foundation will award grants ranging from $25,000 to $50,000 to non-profit organizations for youth leadership development, violence prevention, early intervention and employment, training and education. The grants are designed to address needs in disadvantaged communities, with emphasis on organizations that include service, advocacy, and empowerment. HOME ACCESSIBILITY DESIGN AND FUNDING GUIDES:

Two publications on making existing homes more accessible are available online. The publications provide information on both home accessibility design and funding and were developed by the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency. (Most information, however, is not state specific.)
