The Access Board
An independent Federal agency devoted to accessibility for people with disabilities. It operates with about 30 staff and a governing board of representatives from Federal departments and public members appointed by the President.
Key responsibilities of the Board include:
  • Developing and maintaining accessibility requirements for the built environment, transit vehicles, telecommunications equipment, and for electronic and information technology
  • Providing technical assistance and training on these guidelines and standards
  • Enforcing accessibility standards for federally funded facilities

  • New or Proposed ADA Regulations
    ADA requirements may change as regulations are modified to improve access or to make it easier for entities to comply with the ADA. When new requirements are proposed, a formal procedure is used which calls for public comment and agency review before the requirement is finalized.

  • ADA Enforcement
    Through lawsuits and settlement agreements, the Department of Justice has achieved greater access for individuals with disabilities in hundreds of cases. Under general rules governing lawsuits brought by the Federal government, the Department of Justice may not sue a party unless negotiations to settle the dispute have failed.

  • ADA Materials Available FREE
    The U.S. Department of Justice provides free ADA materials, Regulations and Technical Assistance Materials. Printed materials may be ordered by calling the ADA Information Line [1-800-514-0301 (voice) or 1-800-514-0383 (tty)]. Automated service is available 24-hours a day for recorded information and to order publications. Publications are available in standard print as well as large print, audiotape, Braille, and computer disk.

Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
The mission of the EEOC, as set forth in its strategic plan, is to promote equal opportunity in employment through administrative and judicial enforcement of the federal civil rights laws and through education and technical assistance.


Office of Disability Employment Policy
In the FY 2001 budget, Congress approved a new Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) for the Department of Labor. Programs and staff of the former President's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities have been integrated in this new office. The mission of ODEP, under the leadership of an Assistant Secretary, will be to bring a heightened and permanent long-term focus to the goal of increasing employment of persons with disabilities. This will be achieved through policy analysis, technical assistance, and development of best practices, as well as outreach, education, constituent services, and promoting ODEP's mission among employers.


National Institute for Deafness and Other Communication Disorders
One of the Institutes that comprise the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Federal government's focal point for the support of biomedical research. NIH's mission is to uncover new knowledge that will lead to better health for everyone. Simply described, the goal of NIH research is to acquire new knowledge to help prevent, detect, diagnose, and treat disease and disability. NIH is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.


Pennsylvania Office for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (ODHH)
An office within the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry providing information, referral and advocacy to adults and children who are deaf or hard of hearing, their employers, relatives, friends, physicians, lawyers and counselors.
