    Ototoxicity is ear poisoning. (Oto=ear. Toxicity=poisoning.) This poisoning happens when individuals come into contact with drugs or chemicals poisonous to the ear. The poisoning affects the inner ear and/or vestibulocochlear nerve. Because the inner ear is involved in both hearing and balance, ototoxicity can result in disturbances of either or both these senses.
