Great News on Classroom Acoustics!
Great News! The ANSI Board of Standards Review upheld the classroom acoustics standard against the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI) appeal to withdraw the standard.
Those of you who wrote letters in support of the standard should take special pride in this news! Your support has helped to defeat ARI's action. This is another important step toward victory of the classroom acoustics movement!
With gratitude and pride,
David Lubman and Lou Sutherland
Past Co-Chairs, ANSI S12 WG on Classroom Acoustics
For your interest, the text of the letter by ANSI S12 Chair Paul Schomer is copied below. It was sent to the all members of the disbanded classroom acoustics Working Group, to all cognizant members of ANSI, and to the leadership of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA).

Re: Decision of the ANSI Board of Standards ReviewThis is the second time the BSR has acted to uphold this Standard. As you may remember, last fall two trade associations representing manufacturers of modular buildings and a small group of school business organizations requested that ANSI withdraw the Standard claiming that it was "not in the public interest". The ANSI BSR also rejected those claims.
While all these parties still have an additional opportunity to appeal the decisions of the BSR to ANSI, appeals at this level are very rare and must show why the decision of the BSR is clearly wrong. We will, however, continue with every effort to support this Standard, confident in the knowledge that it is technically correct, economically reasonable, feasible to implement, and most of all it is important and beneficial for the children of the US.
On behalf of S12, I want to express thanks to those of you who supported the Standard by your many hours of volunteer work to develop it and promote its implementation. Your letters of support were gratifying and helpful in the successful outcome of this process.
Paul Schomer, Chair, ANSI S12
